This mixed use development has two components: a residential and retail development including a 39-story, 396 foot tall tower with mid-rise podium elements at the corner of Mission Street and South Van Ness avenue. Minutes away from the high-traffic U.S. 101 highway, the wind circulation from transit ramps were redirected towards the site. BOK Modern partnered with Skidmore Owings + Merill to create an unprecedented commercial wind canopy to shield these wind loads with a state-or-the-art design.
Originally asked for infill panels within a steel structure, BOK Modern combatted tons-worth of structural steel costs through value-engineering and strengthening our metal systems by weaving canopy panels together.
With leading competitive advantage, cost-efficiency, material waste reduction, and structural advantages of eliminating loads of secondary structures, BOK Modern served as a strategic partner and problem-solver in this complex mixed use project. Through seamless install where sub-units were bolted, this project became a groundbreaking 40-foot deep canopy with 0 structural steel.
As our client envisioned futuristic canopies amidst one of the most cultured and bustling neighborhoods in San Francisco, the 1500 Mission Canopy showcases engineering ingenuity: no brackets, only formed metal. Now one of our most popular products, our sunshade canopies refract natural light, are a play-on context, and compliment the environment.
