BŌK Modern performed a historic retrofit of San Francisco’s McGuire Building in the SOMA district, currently the HQ of GM Cruise. Our custom gates along the exterior of the building add contemporary flair to the building’s historic grandeur. Inside the building, we installed a wall screen behind the reception desk. Cascades of perforations portray a sense of the future. We thought this appropriate for GM Cruise’s vision of leading the world in the development of self-driving cars.

San Francisco For a high-rise luxury condominium project in downtown San Francisco, BŌK Modern was asked to provide screening for unsightly mechanical exhaust vents on a public amenity terrace. The same pattern was also used for both security fencing and low safety partitions around the pools and slide areas, all fabricated in aluminum with a clear anodized finish. Typical BŌK Modern minimalist detailing of the bracketry allowed the design of the patterning to be brought to the forefront, accentuating the floating aspect of the circular bubbles. A part of the Stanford Research Park, this affordable housing unit contributes to its community with a corner café and services for the visually impaired. Working with David Baker Architects, the BŌK Modern team collaborated to conceptualize the unit’s quirks. Features such as Cor-Ten wall screens and fences emulate the appearance of age. The anodized aluminum of the balconies and sunshields juxtaposes the Core-Ten with its brilliance and contemporary rectangular cutouts.

Moscone Convention Center

BŌK Modern worked with SOM with Mark Cavagnero Associates Architects on a significant expansion to the Moscone Convention Center. BŌK’s team developed a ‘self-reinforcing’ staggered 3 story tall scrim (screening system) which allows it to ‘hang’ from a single row of structure at the roof and simply pinned out from the building for lateral support only. SOM’s custom ‘diamond’ patterning in a white kynar finish will provide an illusion of a 3rd dimension to the otherwise flat screens.
