On the ‘prow’ end of a multi-family housing project in the Castro district of San Francisco, architect VWMP utilized BŌK Modern’s rain-screen system in aluminum finished with a rusted steel effect paint system. This finish is perfect for clients who want the ‘Cor-ten’ steel look but wants to avoid the rust drips over time. Containing iron ore powder in the paint and applied with acid, the rust effect happens overnight and is almost impossible differentiate from actual rusted metal. Other BŌK Modern elements on the project include Juliette balcony’s in anodized aluminum, cornice sunshades, guard railing and a pedestrian entrance gate finished in the same rust-effect finish.

FIVE88

Another signature project by David Baker Architects, FIVE88 is a new market rate apartment complex located in the new Mission Bay Development South of downtown San Francisco adjacent to the Historic Shipyards.

The dramatic feature Cor-ten Steel facade utilizes BŌK Modern’s patented ‘easy-install’ rainscreen reminiscent of the rusting hull of a ship.

Sunshading panels were attached directly to the rainscreens giving shadows and depth while strategically placed perforations allow unit venting to be concealed behind the panels.

Elsewhere on the project, Anodized aluminum guard rails and sunshades, using the same pattern, gives depth and interest to an otherwise minimal facade.

1500 Mission Canopy BŌK was initially asked to provide panels only to clad a fabricated truss system that cantilevered out from the street 25 feet typical and 40 feet at the corner. Due to costs exceeding the budget, BŌK designed an alternative system that utilizes folded plate to emulate the truss system dramatically reducing the cost of the canopy while also providing a much better aesthetic.
