San Francisco For a high-rise luxury condominium project in downtown San Francisco, BŌK Modern was asked to provide screening for unsightly mechanical exhaust vents on a public amenity terrace. Utilizing the existing support system, the panels provide a much improved screening as well as backdrop to the seating areas. BŌK Modern's versatile B21 pattern matched the verticality of surrounding buildings and windows, and the randomness made each screen look completely custom. A newly constructed four story residential building makes the most of selective application of BŌK Modern panels. As key architectural elements that create vertical patterns across entire elevations, the panels themselves repeat the use of vertical patterns to filter light and create separation. Smaller alternate pattern panels between unit balconies enhance privacy.

On the ‘prow’ end of a multi-family housing project in the Castro district of San Francisco, architect VWMP utilized BŌK Modern’s rain-screen system in aluminum finished with a rusted steel effect paint system. This finish is perfect for clients who want the ‘Cor-ten’ steel look but wants to avoid the rust drips over time. Containing iron ore powder in the paint and applied with acid, the rust effect happens overnight and is almost impossible differentiate from actual rusted metal. Other BŌK Modern elements on the project include Juliette balcony’s in anodized aluminum, cornice sunshades, guard railing and a pedestrian entrance gate finished in the same rust-effect finish.

Azure Mission Bay

San Francisco, CA BŌK guardrails were used extensively on this high rise residential project in San Francisco's Mission Bay district. The challenging factor on the project was there were too many post tensioning cable ends on the slab edge which prohibited imbed weld plates to support the panel brackets. BŌK's solution was to design a flag shaped bracket that could be inset and grouted into the top of the slab via a 4" diameter cast "can". The result was a guardrail unit that could be pre-assembled, dropped into the "cans" and grouted level in place significantly reducing installation costs. The same pattern was used on a dramatic feature wall with backlit accents and our “rust effect” finish emulating a rusted ship’s hull. Hunter’s Point Block 49

Another project by David Baker Architects in the Hunter’s Point district of San Francisco, BŌK Modern provided Cor-Ten guardrails and screens in a custom pattern conceived by the Architects.

This very hip Senior Housing project features a signature entry tower with ‘look-out’ area overlooking the entire South Bay Area.

For a curving stair landing, BŌK Modern provided rolled-steel curved panels resulting in a very sinuous ribbon effect.

BŌK also provided the anodized aluminum sun-shading devices around the southern exposed windows in a scaled down version of the same custom pattern.

FIVE88

Another signature project by David Baker Architects, FIVE88 is a new market rate apartment complex located in the new Mission Bay Development South of downtown San Francisco adjacent to the Historic Shipyards.

The dramatic feature Cor-ten Steel facade utilizes BŌK Modern’s patented ‘easy-install’ rainscreen reminiscent of the rusting hull of a ship.

Sunshading panels were attached directly to the rainscreens giving shadows and depth while strategically placed perforations allow unit venting to be concealed behind the panels.

Elsewhere on the project, Anodized aluminum guard rails and sunshades, using the same pattern, gives depth and interest to an otherwise minimal facade.

1500 Mission Canopy BŌK was initially asked to provide panels only to clad a fabricated truss system that cantilevered out from the street 25 feet typical and 40 feet at the corner. Due to costs exceeding the budget, BŌK designed an alternative system that utilizes folded plate to emulate the truss system dramatically reducing the cost of the canopy while also providing a much better aesthetic.
